After a surprising look, she had of the guest. Mrs. Hall developed an opinion that he might have met an accident or have been operated on. Thinking all these in her mind, Mrs. Hall was busy in drying-up her guest's coat and muffler. She had no clue of guest's helmet and handkerchief. She thought he had perhaps his mouth injured so it was covered with the handkerchief. After sometime when she entered her guest's room to clear the lunch table, the guest was smoking a pipe, the silk muffler was wrapped around the lower part of his face. it gave a confirmation to Mrs. Hall's view that he had his face injured.
The guest had luggage at Bramblehurst station and wanted to get those at the inn was as quick as possible. he enquired about the ways but Mrs. Hall's answer was not pleasing for him. She said there was not pleasing for him. She said there was no speedy delivery and that luggage could reach the inn by tomorrow only. Also, the roads are steep and prone to accidents. She said people are killed and injured. The guest was not much comfortable with Mrs. Hall's reply. Mrs. Hall told him about her sister's son who met one such accident and it took him a long time to get well. He was afraid to get operated on. The way Mrs. Hall was telling about her sister's son, made the guest laugh aloud. He jokingly asked Mrs. Hall "Was He"? Mrs. Hall replied the stranger how she had to do and undo the bandages for her sister's son.
While Mrs. Hall was explaining the stranger about all this, suddenly he asked for some matches as his pipe was out. The way he asked for the matches was some-what rude which Mrs. Hall did not like. She went for the matches. After he got the matches he turned his back on Mrs. Hall and began to stare out of the window. Mrs. Hall could not proceed with her story of her sister's son. Mrs. hall noticed that he did not like to talk anymore on the topics of bandages and operation. She came out of the room. The stranger was in fact in his position for a long time. only for a few minutes, the sound of his walking in the room could be heard. He perhaps, sat in the chair. It seemed that he was talking to himself.
