Chapter-2 Mr. Teddy Henfrey's First Impression

Mrs. Hall wanted to know from the stranger whether he would like to take tea. Before she could ask. Teddy Henfrey entered the inn. He was a clock jobber. he had his tool bag in his hands. He told Mrs. Hall about the harsh weather outside. The room in which the stranger was staying had a clock on its wall and its hour hand was not moving and always stayed at six. Mrs. Hall requested Mr. Teddy to mend it. She led him to the room, the stranger was sitting in the chair and his head was dropping down on one side. There was a dim red light of a fire in the room. It seemed to her that the stranger had an enormous mouth wide open and the monstrous eyes. This all created a fearful sensation in her. In no time, the stranger stoops up in his chair. Mrs. Hall opened the door wide letting enter more light into the room for a clearer vision.

 She informed the stranger that Mr. Teddy was there to mend the clock. The stranger replied in 'yes' in a drowsy voice. When  Mrs. Hall was out for a lamp, the stranger reached near Mr. Teddy and wished him 'good afternoon'. Teddy said to him that he hoped it was not an intrusion into his privacy and the guest agreed to. The stranger said to Mrs. Hall that he wanted the clock mended but he wanted to live alone and undisturbed.

 The Stranger was not happy with the way Mrs. Hall and Henfrey entered his room. He wished the clock was mended soon. He wished to have a cup of tea once the job is over. Mrs. Hall was not interested to encounter her guest in front of Mr. Henfrey. When the stranger enquired about his luggage, she said she had consulted the postman and those can be brought only tomorrow. 
 The stranger informed her that he was an experimental investigator and needed his things as soon as possible. The stranger explained Mrs. Hall about the importance of him staying in solitude. He gave his reasons for staying alone and undisturbed Mrs. Hall nodded in affirmation. The stranger informed her about why he liked to stay in a dark room. Mrs. Hall felt sympathy for him but did not express for a better occasion. 

 Mrs. Hall was not there in the room. Mr. Henfrey was busy with his mending work. The stranger wanted the work finished and room vacated as soon as possible. he asked Mr. Henfrey to finish his job quickly. Mr. Henfrey to felt uncomfortable when he looked at stranger's bandaged head and red glowing eyes in the shadowy light. he finished his job and left the room. On his way down to the village, he was cruising the ugly face of the stranger. He apprehended that such a wrapped and bandage person must be escaping from the police.

 On his way, Mr. Henfrey met Mr. hall standing at a corner. He described him about the suspicious stranger at his inn. He told him about the stranger's appearance and attitude. he reminded Mr. Hall of what happened with his aunt when a stranger met her at Hustings. Mr. Hall became curious to know about the stranger staying at his inn, 'Coaches and Horses'. He asked his wife Mrs. Hall about the stranger. Mrs. Hall tried to convince him that everything was all right, but Mr. Hall was not satisfied.

 To the inquiry of Mr. Hall about the personal details of the stranger. Mrs. Hall replied snappishly. Mr. Hall was little but annoyed and be rushed to the parlor where he found a sheet of paper containing some mathematical computation. He became more suspicious about the stranger and instructed his wife to keep him on watch. He told her to know more about his luggage. When those things reach inn ? the next day Mrs. Hall realized that the guest was unusually stranger than strange. She did not know more about him. it was in the mid-night when she had a bad dream of a monstrously bandaged black eyed man with interminable neck chasing her. She woke up and being a sensible woman, subdued her fear and went to sleep again.
