The American Minister, Mr. Hiram B. Otis, bought a mansion. Canterville chase, even when he was warned by the previous owner Lord Canterville, that the property was haunted. Lord Canterville was a truthful person and this made him by saying the truth about "two skeleton hands and mysterious noise" seen and heard there. He frankly told Mr. Otis that presence of a ghost was experienced by a cleric, Rev. Augustus Dampier, by the Dowager Duchess of Bolton and by Lady Canterville herself. In spite of this, Mr. Otis bought the property because he considered himself as a man of a "modern country", who denied the existence of ghosts.
 Finally, after the purchase, the Otis family headed towards the mansion. In all, it was a family of six members. Mr. Otis was the head of the family. Mrs.Otis family headed towards the mansion. In all, it was a family. Mrs. Otis was beautiful and possessed a superb profile and "magnificent constitution".  Washington, the eldest son, was good-looking. He was fond of visiting casinos and was an excellent dancer. Miss Virginia Otis, aged 15, had large blue eyes. She looked pretty and resembled a "fawn". She was athletic, loved horse riding and was proposed by the Duke of Cheshire. Finally, there were the twins, "The star and stripes". They were delightful boys and apart from Mr. Otis, "the true republicans of the family".

 From Ascot, the nearest railway station, the Otis family boarded a wagon for their seven miles drive to Canterville Chase. It was a lovely July evening and, in high spirits. the family drove through the pinewoods, looking at the fascinating scenic beauty. However, as they reached close to the mansion, the weather became bad and it started raining.
