Next morning, when the Otis family met at breakfast, they discussed the ghost. Mr. Otis as unhappy because the did not accept his presence. Moreover, he criticized his that the sound of metal will still disturb their sleep.

Sometimes it was of dull red color, sometimes vermillion or purple and then it turned to emerald-green color. Though everybody joked about the blood stain, Miss Virginia Kept quiet. She was actually distressed about it.
After a few days, on a Sunday night, the ghost made his second appearance. The family heard a loud crashing sound from the hall. When they went downstairs, they discovered that a large suit of old armor had fallen from its stands injuring the Canterville ghost. The ghost was sitting on a high-backed chair, rubbing his knees with an expression of acute agony on his face. The twins, who were equipped with their pea-shooters, discharged metal balls at the ghost with extreme accuracy. Mr. Otis covered the ghost with a revolver and asked him to raise his hands. The enraged ghost fled away, extinguishing Washington's candle, thereby causing complete darkness. On his way back, Mr. Otis met him and offered him a medicine, pretending to believe that the ghost was ill. The host returned back to his room injured and groaning in pain. On reaching his room, the ghost was shattered. He was really annoyed at the twins and their mother too. he felt really sad because he was unable to bear the load of an Armour which he had won earlier. Since he was injured, apart from repairing the blood stain, he kept quiet for a few days. Later, he decided to reappear before the Otis family. He made separate plans for frightening each and every member of the family. He had a soft corner for Miss Virginia because she never annoyed or insulted him, However, he was really angry with the twins and wanted " to teach them a lesson".
So as to implement his plans, on Friday 17th August, the ghost stepped out for his third appearance. He wore a special dress, got equipped with a dagger and glided through the corridor. Suddenly, to his amazement, he saw another ghost. It was 'a horrible specter' who possessed all the ghostly traits. Moreover, on its body, there was a message written in old characters. Since he had never seen a ghost before, he was terrified and therefore hurried back to his room. Later, he decided to talk to the other ghost.

When he rushed towards the other ghost, he found that it was not a ghost, in fact, just a model of a ghost. On reading the message, he concluded that it meant "This is the real ghost. All other ghosts are imitations". He realized that the twins had played a trick on him.
He became really angry. He made a pledge, meaning, " he will create bloodshed and commit murders if the Chanticleer crows twice". But the bird crowed only once and did not crow for the second time. Cursing the bird, he retired into a 'comfortable lead coffin'/
