The terrible storm continued for the whole night. In the morning when the Otis family came for breakfast, they were surprised to see the blood stain again. It removed again but it reappeared on the second morning. Though removed again, it reappeared on the third morning also. Owing to the stain, for the time, the Otis family believed that a ghost was present there.

 So as to relax, the Otis family went out for a drive. On their drive, they did not talk anything about the ghost. They discussed cinema, kitchen ingredients, baggage check system in railways and the difference in the accents of New York and London. After returning home, the family went to sleep at Eleven O'Clock.

 At the night, Mr. Otis was awakened by a curious noise in the corridor. It sounded like a clank of metal. There was a sound of footsteps too. Mr. Otis opened the door and found the ghost standing there. The ghost was "an old man of terrible aspect" with red eyes and long grey hair in matted coils. His clothes were outdated, dirty, rough and torn. His writs and legs had manacles like that of prisoners. Mr. Otis gave him a bottle of lubricant, advised him to lubricate his manacles, closed the door and retired to bed. The ghost was stunned. Out of frustration, he threw the bottle of lubricant. He ran back emitting a dreadful green light and making funny noises. On his way back, he was attacked by the Otis twins, who threw a pillow at his head.

 The ghost, however, managed to reach his hideout and "leaned up against a moonbeam to recovery his breath". He realized that all through his career of 300 years, he was never treated so badly. He became demoralized. He recollected memories of how he frightened and scared the Dowager Duchess, housemaids, the rector of the parish, Madame de Tremouillac and the wicked Lord Canterville who cheated James Fox out of $50,000. He also remembered about the butler who shot himself and the beautiful lady Stutfiled who drowned herself because of him.

 Out of egotism, the ghost, how can some wicked Americans dominate him? Finally, he decided to take revenge from them.
